What's it about?

Norway, Saturday, February 18, 1928. Hotel Fjell stands at 1,100 meters on the railway line across the high mountains; there is no road. A snowstorm has been raging since the afternoon, the telegraph line is down, and the evening train is stuck. It is the hotel's last evening: Consul Halvard Mørk has sold it and invited everyone to a farewell dinner. At 10:05 p.m. the director and the mountain guide find him dead at his desk in the tower room.

You play the guests and staff snowed in at the hotel that night: the director, the mountain guide, the Consul's daughter, Doctor Aas, a regular guest from Bergen, someone who takes photographs for an illustrated magazine, and the stationmaster of the railway stop. Every character saw something, and each has a reason not to tell everything. Over three rounds you compare times, staircases and doors; documents come to the table, and twice a new piece of news changes the picture.

The case is demanding and quiet rather than showy; an evening takes about three hours. The solution can be worked out from the materials; nobody has to guess. The host plays along: the host guide contains no solution, and the solution stays sealed until the accusation. With five players one role stays empty, and the host guide explains how the evening runs then.

The kit comes as a Print version with one role booklet per character and as a Digital version in phone format. Both tell the same case.

The characters

  • Margit Haugen

Director of the Fjell Mountain Hotel

Margit has run the hotel since 1912 and knows every creaking floorboard in it. Tonight she is giving the farewell dinner for the last guests; as of tomorrow she no longer has a position.

  • Eirik Brekke

the hotel's mountain guide and ski instructor

For eight winters Eirik has led the guests through the high mountains and kept charge of the ski room. He says little, and in any weather he can tell when it is about to turn.

  • Liv Mørk

    the Consul's daughter

Liv grew up in the hotel and has kept house for her father since her mother died. She learned of the hotel's sale from the newspaper.

  • Doctor S. Aas

a doctor from Bergen, regular guest

Doctor Aas has a practice in Bergen and has come to Fjell for two weeks every winter for many years, always staying in Room 7. In the house Aas is thought of as quiet, helpful and a good listener.

  • Jo Vik

takes photographs for an illustrated magazine from Oslo

Jo Vik is here to photograph the hotel's last evening for an illustrated magazine and has set up a darkroom in the old linen room. It is Jo's first time at Fjell, and Jo looks at everything very closely.

  • Nils Ødegaard

stationmaster of the Fjell railway stop

For twenty years Nils has kept the little stop below the hotel, with its telegraph and its signal lamps. He likes to tell how things used to be on the line. Tonight the storm has left him stranded at the hotel.
